When our ears are cold, we can wear earmuffs, but that wasn't true for Chester Greenwood in 1873.
On a winter afternoon, the 15-year old boy went ice skating, and his ears became cold. He tried to cover them with his scarf, but it was not very comfortable. Chester had to stop skating. 'I must solve this problem,' he thought.
On his way home, Chester came across some farm wires and had an idea. He bent a piece of wire to match the shape of his head. Next, he made two ear-shaped circles out of the wire. Then, he asked his grandmother to add fur to each circle. That's how the first pair of earmuffs was born. His friends liked the invention. What a clever idea!
Chester went on to improve the design. He used a steel band to connect the two circles. He also lined soft black cloth on the inside of the circles for comfort.
Soon, everyone in town thought they should have a pair of earmuffs. Later, Chester got a patent for the earmuffs and set up a factory to make them.

Chester Greenwood was an American inventor. He is best known for creating the earmuffs in 1873. He came up with the idea when he was just 15 years old. He made this invention to keep his ears warm. Like every other teen, Greenwood looked forward to winter days and skating with friends and family. Greenwood loved this sport, but he couldn't stay out on the ice for very long. The scarf didn't work for him, so he created the very first pair of earmuffs! Now we can all stay warm in the cold thanks to his clever invention.
