I was a college student in 2008, and I became one of the volunteers for the Beijing Olympic Games. We were trained for more than a year before the Games began. We had courses about the Games, manners, and Western culture. Then I worked at the Beijing Basketball Gym during the Games. Our duty was to welcome important guests from all over the world. They might have questions about going around Beijing and about the Games. We usually left school early in the morning, and arrived back at school late at night, but I was happy I could help others.
My Olympic volunteering journey started last September. I was excited because I was a sports fan. After a training through the Internet, I began my service in Wukesong Sports Center. This center was for ice hockey games. I was excited. I could watch all the interesting games when I got some free time. I also had happy talks with Chinese volunteers. I learned more about Chinese New Year celebrations. I told other volunteers stories of my hometown and made them understand more about Africa. It was a good chance for us young people to know each other.

The ancient Olympic Games were for boys and men only. Women could not join in the Games. But there was a separate sports festival for girls. The festival was held every four years. During the festival, unmarried girls joined a foot race in three age groups. Married women could not join.
The Olympic rings are the sign of the IOC. The colours of the rings were chosen by the IOC to stand for the five continents: Oceania, Africa, America, Asia, and Europe. The white background of the Olympic flag stands for peace. The five colours of the rings from left to right are blue, black, and red at the top. Yellow and green are at the bottom.
The modern Olympic torch began in 1936 at the Berlin Games. It is a link between the ancient and modern Olympics. Now it is a tradition. The torch is lit by the sun in Greece and then passed from runner to runner in a relay to the host city. There it is used to light a flame in the Olympic Stadium. The flame goes on and on till the end of the Games.

Cao Chong was thinking and thinking. At last he said, 'I know how to weigh it.' But no one heard him. The officials kept thinking. Another man said that they could cut the elephant into small parts, weigh one part at a time, and add up the weights. But people did not like this idea because they did not want to kill the elephant. Cao Chong said again, 'I know how to weigh it.' But nobody listened. They did not believe that a six-year-old boy would know better. They still talked among themselves.
Cao Chong pushed his way to the front. He said very loudly, 'I know how to weigh the elephant!' This time everyone heard him. Everyone laughed at him. 'But I do know how!' Cao Chong said. But they laughed when they said it.
