Emily thought about asking her parents for more, but she knew they wouldn't agree.

She also had the idea of asking her classmates to lend her some money,

but it wasn't the right thing to do.

Then, she remembered, 'I bought cute toys, expensive pens and lots of soft drinks.

What a waste of money!'

She thought to herself,

'I don't need more toys, I can easily buy cheaper pens, “我不需要更多的玩具,我可以很容易地买到更便宜的钢笔,

and I can take a bottle of water with me when I go out with my friends.'

From that moment on, Emily decided to spend money only on what she needed.

tins, old books and used paper and sold them for money.

'Every penny counts. It's never too late to start managing money,' Emily thought.

Once upon a time, an old farmer lived in central China.

He led a happy life and enjoyed carefree days.

But one day, he became seriously ill.

With it, you will never go hungry.

It is there, in that box — but do not open it until I am gone.'

After the old man passed away,

the two sons opened the box and found a wooden board with the words 'Diligence' and 'Frugality' on it.

They looked carefully at the board, but couldn't see anything valuable about it.

They were puzzled how it would help them live a good life.

Finally, the brothers decided to cut the board in half.

The elder son took the word 'Diligence', while the younger son took the word 'Frugality'.

8 RC 2 Don't Shpy—Swap!

Reading Club 2

Don't Shop — Swap!

It's common to want new things — in fact, it's normal!

Every time we buy something new, 每次我们买新东西,

our brains send messages to our bodies that make us feel good.

But some teenagers are trying swapping, not shopping for something new.

It's simple: you have a jacket your friend wants to wear,

and your friend has a book you want to read, so you swap.

You both get something new.

You're both happy, and neither of you has spent any money!

Swapping isn't only about saving money, however.

There are lots of reasons to try it!

First, you don't have to wait until you've saved up enough for new earphones or a pair of sunglasses,

so you can get new stuff more often.

Second, your bedroom will be tidier if you swap instead of shopping.

You won't have to find space for books you'll never read,

electric devices you don't use or clothes you don't wear.

Third, swapping is better for the environment.

Making new things uses electricity and water.

When we throw them away, they go to landfill sites and cause more problems.

Swapping means we make fewer new things, and throw less away.

Finally, swapping is fun!
