When you visit the Great Wall of China, you will surely see the beacon towers. We also call them watchtowers or guard towers because ancient soldiers kept watch for enemies from there. Soldiers usually stayed in the towers. If they saw enemies coming, they would make smoke during the day and light fires at night. When the soldiers on the next tower saw the smoke or fire, they would do the same to send the signal on.
