Yuanmingyuan is in Beijing. It covers an area of more than 160,000 square metres. Emperor Kangxi began to build it in 1707. The Emperors of the Qing Dynasty used Yuanmingyuan for over 150 years. It had three famous gardens: Yuanmingyuan, Changchunyuan and Qichunyuan. People around the world knew about Yuanmingyuan's wonderful gardens, amazing views and interesting buildings. They even called it the 'Garden of Gardens'. But in October 1860, British and French soldiers broke into Yuanmingyuan. They took away treasures and started a fire there. The fire burned for three days. In 1900, the Eight-Nation Alliance invaded Beijing, and greatly destroyed Yuanmingyuan.
